Can Hydrogen Cars Be Developed In Our Time
Hydrogen cars are looked at as a solution for America’s dependence on oil. Automakers have invested millions in development of cars that run on hydrogen. In fact, some car makers believe that there is a good possibility that a hydrogen fueled car will be on the market as soon as 2015. So what makes a hydrogen car appealing?
Hydrogen fueled cars will work by converting the chemical energy of hydrogen to mechanical energy by burning hydrogen in an internal combustion engine. Hydrogen fueled cars can also create energy by getting hydrogen to react with oxygen in a fuel cell to run the electric motor eliminating the need for fossil fuels.
So, are hydrogen fueled vehichles a reality or a dream in this lifetime? Many would say that hydrogen fuel is a reality. Automakers have already developed demonstration vehicles to show off their new technology. In fact, automakers have been showing off their hydrogen technology for over a decade.
There are some drawbacks in development of this technology. Hydrogen powered vehicles are going to require filling stations unlike their counterpart, the electric car. In order for hydrogen to take off, someone is going to be required to fund a large building program for these filling stations. Another drawback is that hydrogen fuel is not as effecient as gasoline. It will take more hydrogen fuel to travel the same distance as regular gas.
